The Only Fishing Trip Packing Checklist You'll Ever Need

You Will Forget Something (Unless You Use a List)

Every angler has the stories. Drive two hours to a lake and realize the entire tackle box got left at home: rods, reels, and nothing to tie on. Forget the sunscreen and spend a week looking like a lobster. Forget the boat plug and lose 20 minutes in a parking lot hunting for a replacement. They all share one root cause: no checklist.

The fix is to write one down and tape it to the inside of the garage door. Here's the list, built around the items that go missing most often.

Core Fishing Gear

• Rods and reels (check that reels are spooled with fresh line)
• Tackle box / tackle trays with lures appropriate for target species
• Live bait and bait container (if using live bait)
• Fishing license (physical or on your phone, check your state's rules)
• Pliers / hook remover
• Line cutters or scissors
• Extra line (at least one spool of your primary line)
• Extra hooks, weights, and bobbers
• Landing net
• Stringer or cooler (if keeping fish)

Safety Gear

• Life jacket / PFD (required by law on boats in most states)
• First aid kit (with bandages, antiseptic, and hook removal tools)
• Sunscreen (SPF 30+ minimum, reapply every 2 hours)
• Polarized sunglasses
• Cell phone in waterproof case
• Whistle or signaling device (for boat/kayak trips)
• Weather app checked morning of, know what's coming

Comfort Items

• Hat with a brim (sun protection and glare reduction)
• Rain jacket (lightweight, packable, weather changes fast)
• Extra dry shirt in a plastic bag
• Bug spray (DEET or picaridin-based)
• Towel or rag (for drying hands, wiping slime)
• Chair or bucket to sit on (for bank fishing)
• Gloves (for cold weather or handling toothy fish)

Food and Water

• Water, more than you think you need (dehydration sneaks up on water)
• Snacks, protein bars, trail mix, jerky (easy, no prep, no mess)
• Lunch (for full-day trips, sandwiches in a cooler)
• Cooler with ice (for drinks and for keeping fish fresh)
• Trash bag (pack it in, pack it out, no exceptions)

Boat-Specific Additions

Overnight / Multi-Day Additions

• Tent and sleeping gear (if camping)
• Headlamp with extra batteries (essential for pre-dawn and night fishing)
• Extra clothing (layers for temperature changes)
• Cooking gear and food for meals
• Toiletries and medications
• Charger / power bank for electronics
• Maps or GPS for unfamiliar areas
